Every year in March, daylight saving time (DST) forces us to "spring forward."
It's a reminder that spring is approaching, and warmer temperatures will be in the months ahead. For many of us, DST is a time for a change, a time to adjust our clocks, routines, and lifestyles. In this blog post, I'll discuss the history and implications of DST, and why we need to spring forward each year.
For years, governments worldwide have used DST to adjust their local time to seasonal changes and make the most of available daylight. The Summer Time Act of 1916 made DST mandatory in the United Kingdom, and other nations soon followed suit. In the United States, daylight saving time was not standardized until the 1966 Uniform Time Act.
Today, the purpose of DST is to extend the length of the day during the summer months, when longer days provide more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and be productive with the added sunlight. During daylight saving time, clocks spring forward an hour, meaning that the sunrise happens later in the morning and evening darkness arrives later. This additional hour of daylight in the evening can be beneficial for farmers, as it extends the working hours for employees and equipment and businesses that stay open late.
Also, because the change from standard to daylight saving time only happens once a year, it helps to readjust our body clocks and improve our sleep patterns. Although the switch can initially be disorienting, research shows that the shift can help improve our overall sleep quality and even make us less depressed in the long run.
All in all, springing forward is essential and beneficial. It creates more opportunities for people to enjoy the sunshine and get outdoors, boosts productivity, and adjusts our sleep patterns. Although change is never easy, it's important to remember the positive effects of spring forward and to embrace the shift in time each year
